What Is A Thermogenic?
Defining Thermogenic/Thermogenesis
Thermogenesis is the scientific term for generating heat. The word thermogenic literally means heat-producing. In fact, almost all chemical interactions in the body are heat-producing–thermogenic–which gives rise to the basal metabolic rate. The basal metabolic rate (or resting metabolic rate) is the rate at which your body burns calories performing its basic functions. Said another way, it is the calories your body burns when it is at rest.
Common natural sources of thermogenics include caffeine, green tea (for its caffeine and a compound called, EGCG), eggs and whey protein. Thermogenic supplements often combine ingredients for the most effective result. But, more on that a bit later.
Thermogenics and Fat Burning
So, what does thermogenesis have to do with fat burning and what is a thermogenic? A thermogenic is a food or supplement that stimulates thermogenesis in the body, which has multiple effects. Firstly, a thermogenic will work to increase your metabolism, thus burning more calories both while working out and while at rest. Secondly, thermogenics help to increase energy, thus making workouts more intense and effective, leading to greater calorie burn and fat loss. This combination of increased resting metabolic rate and increased exercise intensity works synergistically to take fat burning to another level.
